January 23, 2012 - Changes to Trim Road Widening Project
Orléans – Following a detailed traffic analysis and extensive consultation with various Orléans communities, City Councillors Bob Monette and Stephen Blais today announced the City will only proceed with 2 of the 4 roundabouts originally proposed for Trim Road.
“Trim Road is one of the biggest projects for our community in over a decade,” says Cumberland Councillor Stephen Blais. “The widening and realignment of Trim Road will help reduce commute times for our residents and improve safety for all users including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.”
During the preliminary design stage of the Trim Road Widening project (HWY 174 to Innes Road), roundabout assessments were performed for all of the major intersections within the project limits.
“The City is moving forward with a plan for Trim Road that takes into consideration the concerns we heard from our residents.” says Orléans Councillor Bob Monette. “As City Councillor, I am happy that we were able to work together to ensure that we can move ahead with this long awaited project which will help improve our community for generations to come while ensuring the safety of our residents.”
The City is proposing to proceed with the implementation of the two most northern roundabouts (Dairy Road and St. Joseph Blvd.), which are located in an industrial setting, followed to the south by four traffic control signals (Watters, Portobello/Spring Ridge, future Frank Kenny and Valin) located in a residential area.
According to experts in the field, it is generally not ideal to have a signalized intersection in the middle of a roundabout corridor since it reduces the potential for continuous flow of traffic. As such, traffic must come to a stop at the signal, which offsets the benefits of a roundabout.
As per provincial regulations, reviewing the operation of the corridor as a whole, and taking into account the fact that a traffic signal is required at Watters and Valin, the City is recommending that traffic control signals be installed at the intersections of Portobello Boulevard/Spring Ridge Drive at Trim Road and Trim Road and the future Frank Kenny connection.
The roundabout proposed for the intersection of Innes and the future Frank Kenny extension will also remain in place.
